Drama Game: Pass the Sound

pass the sound gameType: Warm-up, Focus

Procedure:

1.  In a standing circle, pass a “whoosh” around the circle. This is done by saying “whoosh!” and throwing your hands toward the person next to you.

2.  After it goes around a couple times stop the “Whoosh!” and send a “Bing!” going the opposite way, using a different hand gesture.

3.  Now tell the kids they need to put their focus caps on, because you’re going to send a “Whoosh!” going one direction, then a “Bing!” going the opposite direction.

4.  At some point they of course will overlap over one student so that student needs to be prepared.

5.  Try this out a few times. If they’re up for it, try adding in a 3rd layer, “Ooga!”.

    Another one like this we call “oil slick”

    Stand in a circle. You start with passing “Vroom” around the circle puting their hands together pointing the way they are sending the noise. Once that has been passed around a few times throw in the word “stop” now the “vroom” has to go the other way at the same time throwing their hands in the air, after that point a new sound is added “vroom” and that has to go the other way. Then throw in “woosh” where the action is sent a few kids down. Finally throw in the saying “oil slick” at which point everyone throws their hands in the air spinning to another position in the circle and the “vroom” starts again. Anyone can change the sound at any point. Kids love it.

    Have 4 pictures in middle of the circle. The sound passed around is featured in the pronunciation of 1 or 2 of those pictures. As the sound is passed around, suddenly stop. One boy and one girl chosen race to select pictures featuring that sound. Two other children go to centre of circle and mime actions etc connected with the pictures. All the children copy the mimes. A variation is where two other children go out of the circle; they are shown pictures. They go back in and mime. After a few sessions, perhaps a tableau could be set up: four children mime then freeze. Children in circle describe what they see: they could point to each child in the tableau and say which phoneme they represent. Eg. Child miming eating. Sound is /i:/. Its kind of phonemic mime.
