drama game don't think

Type: Creativity, Warm Up

Purpose: An activity to help students follow their first impulses, to not think too much.

Materials:  A stack of index cards.  A hat, bowl or bag to place them in.

Procedure:

1.  Hand out a blank index card to each student.

2.  Ask the students to write on open-ended or fill-in-the-blank phrase on the index card.

For example:

“My favorite time of day is _______.”

“If I could be any superhero I would be _______.”

“When I wake up in the morning, I like to _______.”

etc.

(If your students are too young, consider creating all these phrases on your own ahead of time.)

3.  Fold all the index cards in half and place them in the hat.

4.  Create a standing circle and explain to the players that you will pass the hat around. They are to draw one card from the hat and answer it as quickly as possible, then pass the hat along. There are no wrong answers, just say whatever comes to your head first!

5.  Begin the first round. Time them with a stopwatch.

6.  Do two or three more rounds, telling them each round they must beat their previous time. Encourage them to go faster and faster. Give them a goal, do you think you can do it within 60 seconds?

7.  By the 3rd or 4th round, they should be completely answering from their first impulse.

REFLECTION: What was it like to not think? Did you feel yourself censoring yourself in the beginning? What’s the value of not censoring yourself?

“Amazingly helpful! A huge gift for someone trying to get a drama club going in a middle school setting. Full of great suggestions and easy to digest format.”
